When the vert stacks up.

Three hours in and the climbing started stacking. My calves were locking up. Took a packet between switchbacks and felt a noticeable difference by the next ridge. I keep one on me now.

Mountain bike, full-day ride

What you do after.

Got back to the truck with my feet cramped and legs spent. Took a packet while loading the bike. A few minutes later things had eased up. Recovery started before I even stretched.
